Local Girl Represents Inishmagrath
at Special Occasion

Niamh Fallon, daughter of Ann and Tomás Fallon, Annagherra,
represented our parish at a special Mass in Killeshandra on Sunday, June 9.

The Mission Monument at the site of the old convent

The Mass was organised by the Missionary Sisters of the Holy Rosary
to mark the demolition of the old Holy Rosary Convent in Drumully, Killeshandra,
and to bless a monument commemorating all the sisters who trained in the the convent
before going on the missions in Nigeria and in many other countries worldwide.

Niamh was among a number of young people from around the diocese
who attended the Mass and were presented with Mission Candles for their parishes.
The candles were presented to the young people by Holy Rosary Sisters from all around the world.
The candles symbolise the missionary spirit that reaches out to all  parishes.

It was very appropriate that Niamh was present at this ceremony
as her great-grandaunt was a member of the Holy Rosary Sisters.

The Holy Rosary Sisters first came to Killeshandra when their congregation was first founded in 1924,
moving into a large house in the townland of Drumully.
Over the years, as the number of vocations soared,
the convent grew into a very large complex,
giving much needed employment to many people in the locality.

From the late 1960’s the numbers entering the order declined rapidly
and in 1985 the sister built a new convent in Cavan town and the old convent was closed.
It was demolished in 2012.

The Sisters and Lakelands Co-op, the current owner of the convent lands,
decided to build a monument to the many sisters who left Killeshandra
to severe as Missionaries in many parts of the world.

This monument was blessed by Bishop Leo O’Reilly during the Mass.

Bishop Leo was chief celebrant of the Mass.
He was assisted by Bishop Donal Murray, whose aunt was a Holy Rosary Sister
and by a number of priests, including two African priests.

A large number of Sisters from around the world attended the Mass.
for many of them this was a very nostalgic occasion.

Among the large congregation were many relatives of nuns who had studied in Killeshandra Convent
and a large number of people from the locality.
