Peter Foley RIP

The death has taken place of

Peter Foley,

Spencer Harbour
Drumkeeran

It was with stunned disbelief
that our community learned of Peter’s untimely death
on Wednesday, 18 February.

Although people had recently become aware that he was very ill,
news of his death was greeted with total shock and deep sadness.

A native of Kells, Co Meath, Peter Foley settled in Drumkeeran in 1976.

As an auctioneer and livestock assessor by profession,
Peter was well known around the major marts in the West of Ireland.
He was highly regarded by all as a man of great integrity,
equally fair to seller and buyer alike.

In the eyes of all who knew him, Peter was simply a perfect gentleman.
He was a genuine and sincere man,
a man who was happy to meet with people and to chat with them,
whether they be farmers or business people,
professional people or the local characters,
and he would chat away to them about any topic under the sun.

Peter, he had a quiet, gentle warmth about him,
a warmth and a smile and a gentle sense of humour
that that endeared him to all who met him.

Peter’s was a quiet and unassuming presence in our community.
He was always willing to help out in any way he could.
For example in the early 1990’s he played a leading role in in Drumkeeran GAA Club
and as Chairperson of the Festival Committee that helped raise over IR£20,000
towards the development of the football pitch and grounds.
In whatever he did, Peter was not one to seek the limelight.
He was quite happy to quietly and humbly play his part, and leave it at that.

And, of course he was a great family man.
He married Ann in 1979 and totally dedicated himself to her
and to caring for and raising their two sons, Michael and Alan.

Peter was also a man of deep and devout faith.
He would never miss Sunday Mass.
He was a reader of God’s word at Masses in Tarmon church.
No matter where he was travelling,
he quite regularly stopped off at Tarmon Church
or at other road-side churches
and spend a few minutes in the presence of the Lord.

The huge crowds that attended the removal
and the Funeral Mass
bore eloquant testimony to high regard in which Peter Foley was held
both within the local Drumkeeran community
and in the wider farming and livestock communities in the West.

Peter is survived by his wife Ann,
and by his sons, Michael and Alan.
He is also survived by his sisters Annette and Delores
and by his brothers Michael and John.

Fr Donal Kilduff, Fr Joe Fitzgerald, Fr Felim Kelly and Fr John Sexton
joined Fr Gerard Alwill in celebrating the Mass of the Resurrection
on Saturday, 21 February.

After the Mass
Peter was laid to rest in Castlerea,
Co Roscommon.
