Annie Conlon RIP

It was with great shock and deep sadness

that the community learned of the sudden death of Annie Conlon, Sheena.

Annie  died In Sligo Regional Hospital on Wednesday evening, 23rd October.

Annie was born in 1927, in Lugnaskeehan, near Killargue.
She was one of five children born to Patrick and Mary McTiernan.

Annie was to spend all for her life in and around the locality,
firstly Lugnaskeehan, then Tullynamoyle, later Gubaderra,
and then for the last 15 years, Sheena.

Her life was typical of the lives of so many people of her time.
In her younger years she helped her parents,
doing her share of work in the home and on the family farm.
She enjoyed cooking and baking, and was very good at both.

Annie Conlon was a lady who really enjoyed meeting people.
Above all she loved to see her neighbours call to the house.
They were made to feel welcome by the warmth of her smile,
by her gentle good humour,  and by the cuppa and the slice of treacle bread.
Over the years, regardless of where she lived,
Annie was always blessed with great neighbours
and they, in turn, were blessed by having her as their neighbour.

Annie was a devoted wife
and she was a loving and dedicated mother to her children;
to her daughters Teresa, Peggy, Marie (now sadly deceased), Gertie and Kathy,
and to her sons Gerry and Seamus.
And in more recent years she took great delight in all of her grandchildren.

Above all, Annie was a great lady to enjoy a party.
Only two years ago she went to London for a family wedding.
She always looked forward to meeting her friends in the 99-Club and in the Day Services.
She enjoyed the chat and the banter,
the fun and the laughter, the games and the craft classes.

Annie was a great follower of the TV soaps such as Fair City, Coronation Street etc.
She also kept herself abreast of current affairs,
whether by watching the TV news or by reading the Leitrim Observer.
She also had a good knowledge of the Irish language
and was well able to understand most of the news stories broadcast on
An Nuacht.

Another very important part of her life was her strong faith.
Throughout her life Annie was loyal to her Sunday Mass and to her Rosary.
In recent years, when she was no longer able to get to Sunday Mass,
she was delighted to be able to attend the Tuesday morning Mass in Aras Bhride.
On Tuesday evenings, she hosted the Rosary group in her house in Sheena.

It was that faith that supported her and consoled her during the sad times of her life,
and there were many such times.

She is survived by her daughters Peggy, Kathy, Teresa and Gertie,
by her sons Seamus and Gerry
and by her sister Freda in England.

There were large attendances at both the Removal on Friday evening
and at the Funeral Mass on Saturday afternoon,
a sign of the high esteem in which she was held by the community.
The Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated by Fr Gerard Alwill PP
assisted by Fr John Sexton, Killargue.

After the Mass, Annie was laid to rest in Drumkeeran Cemetery.
